It was a curious start to the week. After the exciting week the week before. I was wondering what this week would bring. As I was driving in to work Monday morning listening to the Mike and Mike morning show. I heard something I thought I would never hear. I already knew that Mike Greenberg was not the sharpest tool in the shed but he said something that made me realize that by thinking he was not too smart was giving him way too much credit. He was talking about how he did not know what a credenza was. Which is fine but when you are in your 40’s and have never at least heard the word credenza it is a bit odd but not unacceptable. The thing that makes it not too smart is that his wife had asked him to get a screw driver out of the credenza. He could not because he did not know what a credenza was. He then went on to say that he did not know the difference between a straight head and a Phillips head screw driver. When you are a 40 year old (man or woman) and you don’t know the difference between those two devices. That is just sad. So as a test I asked my 13 year old daughter and what do you know. She knew the difference and was surprised that a grown up would not know the difference.
Greenberg does not deny that he is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Which makes you think that either it is really true or this is just part of the act that they put on in the morning. Of the ESPN radio shows this is actually one of the best.
In the NBA there were a few major mile stones that were achieved. Kobe played his last game. He scored 60 points in his final game. It took him 50 shots to do it but I am ok with that. He got to choose how he wanted to go out and was able to do it. Not many players get to play their entire career with one team and then choose how they are going to end their career. I saw congratulations to Kobe on a great career. 5 Championships and some very memorable games. A few bad things in there but in the end he mostly made up for it. Is Kobe one of the top 5 players of all time? Probably not. I am not sure he is one of the top 5 players for the Lakers of all time. 1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, 2. Jerry West, 3. Magic Johnson, 4. Elgin Baylor 5. Kobe Bryant . That is the way I see it. You may see it differently if so Tell me your list in the comments.
The other big story in the NBA is the Warriors. They hit their 73rd win in their 82nd game. I am glad that they went for it. Chances are high that no matter how good they are the next few years. They will not have a chance to get there again. This is a once in a career type of thing. It is a record while not unbreakable it will be very difficult to break. If it you pass up on this type of opportunity when you have the chance it is something you will regret for ever. I hear the loud mouths saying BUT CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE MORE IMPORTANT. Maybe they are but they have one and if they set the record and then win the championship then it is an all time great season. Curry got hurt in game one of the playoffs. It is a sprained ankle. Probably nothing and if he has to sit. More then likely not a problem. They should have no trouble taking Houston out even with out him. I really don’t see any surprises happening in the first round of the NBA playoffs.
The NHL playoffs are also under way. The NHL Playoffs are on NBC. Well at least I think they are. Some of the games have been more than difficult to find even though they have been listed as being on NBC. To NBC I would say if you really don’t want to show the games then don’t bid on them again. Actually I would say NBC please don’t bid on them again. Please FOX or ESPN step up and grab the rights to the NHL. You could probably get a great deal and I am sure that the numbers would go up for the NHL.
NASCAR was at Bristol Motor Speedway this week. This race is showing more that NASCAR has a problem. Bristol seats 160,000 people. There was probably 80,000 people there but since the Speedway seats so many people it looked like a ghost town. Looks like people pretty much were able to sit where ever they wanted. The race was a somewhat ho hum race. Short track racing is usually pretty exciting. There were a few fun passes but most of the time cars were blowing tires and finding the wall. Unlike some of the previous races this year. There was no photo finish. Carl Edwards pulled away at the end and the race was for 2nd. Which Dale Earnhardt Jr. too. Of course in the famous words of Ricky Bobby. If you aint first you are last. Second place is the first loser. Edwards nailed his customary back flip and the sad thing is that the back flip was actually the most exciting part of this race.
After giving Kyle Busch a ringing endorsement last week. I jinxed him and and he spun out several times in this race and then finally on lap 258 he spun out for the final time. Eh it happens Kyle finished 38th in a 40 car field. It happens. Since he has two wins it really does not matter much how the rest of the season leading up to the chase goes for him. He will be in the field and that is when it will matter the most. At this point he can experiment and try different things. One bad finish is not going to make any difference for him.
In movie news. The Jungle Book. Took first place at the box office this weekend. Finishing $80 million ahead of Barber Shop: The Next Cut. The Jungle Book is getting an 8.1 rating on IMDB. I am sure that it is a really good movie. It has great actors involved with it and a box office mega star in John Favreau. Saying that this a a movie I am going to pass on. The Jungle Book released in 1967 has strong memories for me and I saw no reason for this movie to be remade. Obviously I was wrong since this movie is going to make a boat load of money. I am sure that there will be at least one squeal if not more. I guess all this says is that I would not be able to make it as a movie producer.
TV was quite light this week. Fear the Walking Dead did come out strong. So that was nice since after the first 6 episodes I had no expectations. It was also a nice surprise sine the season finally of The Walking Dead was so bad. I do have a new favorite TV show. On the History Channel on Tuesday nights Forged in Fire is just memorizing. 4 Blacksmiths face off against each other. The task is to make a blade out of some kind of steel that they all have to work with. The Forging and very interesting and the Host and Judges are fun to listen too. The most interesting of the Judges is Doug Marcaida When he tests the blades and give the results it is just really interesting. I would definitely recommend this show. At least give it a chance and check it out.
What did I miss? What were your observations about last week in the world of sports? Here it to a great NHL and NBA playoff season.
