The Week That WasSuper Bow and the rest.  That is how this week went.  To everyone that thinks that even a crappy super bowl would be out shined.  You are nuts.  While there were other things in sports going on.  Almost everything was dominated by the Super Bowl.  It will be that way for the foreseeable future.  Even if you believe that the NFL has shown some cracks in its shield.  The NFL is still by far the most popular sport in the country.  The NBA and NHL trade deadlines are almost here.   Golf is getting into the interesting part of the start of the season.  Wow that is a mouthful to say.  It is only a few weeks till NASCAR starts.  From the middle of February on is the part of the college basketball season gets interesting and so far it is not disappointing.  All this and more in the Week That Was.

The Super Bowl

Before I get into the game.  I heard something on the radio this morning that really annoyed me.  It was on the Golic and Wingo morning show.  I listen to them mostly because it is what I have been listening to for a really long time in the morning.  They say some ok things.  But they really say a lot of really stupid things.  Today they were of course talking about the Super Bowl.  As you know it was not the most captivating game ever played.  A few people that are really into defense thought it was but the rest world thought it was a blah game.  I am not opposed to a good defensive struggle but this game was different.  Anyway Wingo got on a rant about people complaining about the game.  The answer that Wingo had was if you don’t like it then don’t watch.   While that is an option.  Another option is for me to watch it so that I can complain about it.  Thank you for the advice Wingo but I will watch and complain regardless of how you feel about it.

Ok now that i have that out of my system.  The Super Bowl was a game.  LOL   yes it was.  It was a defensive game.  After a season of crazy offense.  When everyone jumped to conclusions that the offense had all the advantages and defense was being intentionally crippled.  While part of that may be true.  Some how in the biggest game of the year the defenses shined.   There were a few poor plays.  A few drops that would have changed the course of the game.  Stuff like that happens every game.  We ended up with the lowest scoring Super Bowl ever played.  What did not change is that the Patriots won again.   A team that people had given up for dead.   As you can tell they were not.

What we did find out.  Tom Brady still has it.  In the first series of the game he threw an interception.  The Rams promptly did absolutely nothing with it.  By nothing I mean it really looked like they were not trying.   It was the dud of all duds.  On the bright side it was one of the shortest games I have ever seen.  The game flew bye.  It seemed like the half time show took longer than the game.  It did not but only seemed that way.   The commercials were not much to remember either.  The best one was probably the one for the NFL 100 year anniversary.  It was pretty fun to watch.  Most of the rest of them.  After the game was done.  I could not even remember them.  The parts of the commercials I do remember.  I can’t recall what product they were for.  So as much as the game was difficult to watch.   It was still better than the commercials and the half time show.

With the season done.  We can now look forward to the off season.   There will be the combine, free agency and then the draft.  It will all come up very quickly.  Then the next thing you know it will be time to report to training camp and on to the next season.

NBA – Trade Deadline and No Not taking spotlight from NFL

A lot of people are correct that the NBA trade deadline and off season is more interesting then the NBA regular season.   I would not say that makes it actually a goo thing.   It is an interesting thing but does not say much for the regular season. I was talking with some one this weekend and we agreed that the NBA would be better off getting rid of the conferences.  Do some kind of weighted round robin and then take the top 16 teams into the playoffs.  Have the 1 play the 16 seed and so on.  It would make more sense than what the NBA is doing now.  The NHL could do the same thing and it would make more sence.   That discussion is for another day.  The big trade the Mavericks made for Kristaps Porzingis.   The Knickes blew this one.  I think that they could have gotten a lot more in return for this trade.  Porzingis is going to be a team changing player for the next 10 years.   The Mavs in my opinion came out on top in this one.  Not sure what the Knicks think is going to happen here for them.  There ar much better places for free agents to head to.  Even small market teams like the Bucks are making themselves a destination now.  The Knicks are a floundering team with an eratic owner.   I do not see them being able to make a run at a group of free agents that will make them a contender.  With Porzingis they could have built around him.  Now they are starting over again.  Seems like a broken record for the last 20 years.

On the other side of the Nation.  The Lakers are putting themselves in position to possibly be a top two team in the west.  Possibly as soon as the last third of the season.  If they can pull of the trade with the Pelicans for Anthony Davis.  It really will not make much difference what the other parts of the team are.  Think about what the Cavs would have been with LeBron, Davis and the players they had there.  The team the Cavs had were adequate roll players for LeBron.  If it were Anthony Davis and LeBron with those players they probably would have beat the Warriors at least one more time.  If they can pull this off the Lakers will be in a situation where they could win the West.  We will find out this week if they can pull of this trade.  It all depends on if another team can come in with a better offer.  The Pelicans can wait if they want to.  Davis has anther year on his contract.  If a team does not want to put up enough they have a whole year to work on a trade.

Even after LeBron being out since Christmas the Lakers are only a game and a half out of a playoff spot.  Even if they can not complete the trade for Davis.  The Lakers will end up in the playoffs.  That will make it a successful season for them even if they do not go deep into the playoffs.  To be honest with father time chasing LeBron getting some time off this year might get him the rest he needs to make some big runs as he glides into the twilight of his career.

NHL Slide toward the end of the regular season

With the All Star game out of the way.  The NHL can get back to the more interesting games.   Tampa has pretty much clinched a playoff spot and more than likely will have home ice though the playoffs.   In the East they have a `14 point lead with 30 games left to play.  So there is a lot of time for someone to catch them.  LOL or a lot of time for them to pull away even more.  Unless someone gets hurt for the Lighting I expect them to be the top seed in the East.   In the west the race is much closer.  There are four teams with in seven points of the top spot.  The Flames are in the top seed at this point.  Three points ahead of the Jets.  Following them are the Sharks and then Predators.   I could see any one of those four teams getting the top seed.   They are all pretty evenly matched.  Have had up and down points in the season.  It will be interesting to see how it plays out for them.

The Bottom dwellers have not changed much either.   The Senators and the Kings are about as bad as you can get.  The Wings, Devils and Blackhawks are not much better.  With 30 games left any one of these teams could completely fall apart.  Of those 5 teams the Senators have the best chance of getting the number one pick at 18.5%.  Too bad they traded it to the Avalanche.  There are really about five really good players in this draft.  So all five teams will make out alright in this draft.     That is about it for the race to the top and to the bottom in the NHL.

NCAA Basketball Starting to shape up

Getting into the second week of February the college basketball will finally start to matter.   Teams will be trying to position for a spot in the tournament.  The B1G seems to have completed their transition to a more powerful basketball conference than a football conference.  After a year that was very forgettable for B1G football.  The basketball teams have been showing up.  Even with Michigan State and Michigan getting some unexpected losses last week.  They are both poised to get a 2 or three seed.   One of them could still end up with a one seed if things play out right.   The B1G could get as many as 9 teams in.  That is a huge number.

Even with all that the SEC is poking the B1G in the eye with a Tennessee stick.  Where did that come from.  Tennessee has only lost one game.  They are sitting at te top of the polls.  Tennessee is in a spot to get a one seed.  Possibly the over all top spot in the tournament.   Even with all that does any one really believe that they are the top team in the country?  On paper I am sure there area a few.  In the tournament I would not be putting money on them.

This is the part of the season I start to really pay attention to.  Even though I am not a huge basketball fan.  The End of the year conference tournaments and the NCAA tournament are very exciting and fun to watch.  After the Super Bowl this may be the most exciting thing in sports. Many people would say that it is even more exciting than the Super Bowl.  After all it is not just one game like the Super Bowl.  So I get it.

NASCAR is About to Start

With football completely done.  Basketball getting close to its interesting time.  The NHL is difficult to find.  NASCAR is about to make a come back.  I know it seems like we were just complaining about how long the season is and that they need to shorten it.  Yet here we are talking about being excited for NASCAR to be back.  That is because the first 16 races of the season are the exciting part of the season.  Daytona is a spectacle.   Their first even of the season is done right.  With Qualifying.  The Twin 125’s and then the race.  Maybe they should do less races and do more weekends like this.  Probably not possible.  But it does make for a great start to the season.  In a few weeks we will be doing our NASCAR preview.

On the TV Front

We have watched Bird Box.  Seemed like the thing to do.  Hated it till the end.  So if you are going to decide to watch it.  Stick with it.  You will not be disappointed.  We also watched You.   That was quite interesting and will have you checking your security settings on your social media account.  Even with the NetFlix price increase it is stil worth the price.  The think in the media world that disappointed me is Googles decision to shut down Google+.  Probably knew that was going to happen since Google seems to start a lot of projects and then just abandon them.  This situation is no different.  Long Live Google+

That is it for this week.  Next week the NBA trade deadline will have passed.  Will be interesting to see what happens.  It will be our first week in over half a year with out any football.  What in the world are we going to do????
