Sports Journalist vs Entertainer  is there a difference and how do we know the difference. There are still some sports journalists out there.  But like us here most are entertainers.   Or opinion givers.  There is room for both.  I got the idea for this post from listening to my local sports radio station.  I have mentioned them many times in other posts.  A few of them are pretty good.  Most of them are stupid.  That is fine.  They are not journalists.

In most cases they are not even reporters.  The personalities give opinions and talk about a lot of crap.  That is fine.  I stay mostly entertained when I am driving around each day.  I do wish that they would yell less.  That part gets annoying.  The yelling is more annoying than the mostly dumb opinions they drone on about.

Which again is fine.  Listening to a radio show is a choice.  I choose to make that choice.  Mostly so that I can either agree or disagree with their opinion.   There are different levels of stupid though.   For me the local hosts stupid is easier to put up with than the national guys stupid.

I used to have some choice but one day that choice was taken away when the other sports talk radio station switched to classic rock.  There was no transition.  They did a sports show that ended at noon.  When they came back from commercial they were playing music.  Not even sure they let the hosts know ahead of time what was going to happen.  As annoying as that was.  That is not what this post is about.

Sports Journalist Vs. Entertainer

I am not sure that most people out there understand the difference between a sports journalist and some one who is on a sports radio show that focuses on sports but is not journalism.  The local hosts that yell all the time had a whole section of their show dedicated to Colin Cowherd and what a hypocrite he is.  That part is true.  He is.  But he is also an entertainer.  His main goal it to make a show that people will either love or hate.

He, like us here, give opinions on things.  Things he may or may not feel strongly about.  For the most part he really does not care what the point is that he is making.  Tomorrow he may make the exact oposite point.  Since he is not giving facts.  It really does not matter.  One day he may hate a team. The next day he may love them.  That is what he does.

The local show got upset with that because Cowherd switched his opinion of a team that he blasted last year. They were able to figure out that he does this to get ratings.  That he will go with what ever opinion will get him the numbers.  He is going to say things that will make people either love him or hate him.  He is not a journalist and makes no claim that he is.  Like the local guys he is out to get numbers.  Numbers of people that either watch him on TV or listen to him on the radio.  The difference is he does it on a national scale so he is trying to reach a more diverse group of people.  Again nothing wrong with that.

I get why they went on a rant about him.  In the end they concluded that every time someone responds to one of his tweets or clicks on one of his posts.  That they are helping to make him some money.  Yes.  You are correct.  Glad that you media experts were able to figure that out.  LOL

Colin Cowherd is fine.  I can take him in small doses.  He used to be alight but since the Stephen A. Smith model is working he has gone that route.  Really cant blame him since Stephen A. Smith is making $9 million a year.  I don’t get it but it has worked.

If you are going to rant about sports media personalities.  Make sure you understand the difference between a Sports Journalist and an Entertainer.
