The first week of 2019 did not disappoint. The NFL playoff started out with a bang. Some very interesting things happened this weekend. One of the best things that happened was that ESPN got rid of the Booger Mobile. That thing was a bad idea from the start. While I get what they were going for. ESPN really did not think it though. The College Football Playoff wrapped up. It was Alabama and Clemson. We have stated many times at Biglakesports. The winner of this game really does not matter. Over all it is a loss for College Football.
NFL Interesting week
With the playoffs dominating the NFL news it is easy to forget that there is other stuff going on. There are seven teams that do not have a coach at this point. Some of these teams are waiting for coaches that are in the playoffs. Nothing they can do there but wait till those coaches are out of it. Many of the teams are getting in a lot of interviews. I get interviewing as many people as you can. Guess it really can’t hurt anything. Maybe they are tying to hide who they are actually targeting. Some of the people they are interviewing have no chance at the job.
Having never been a coach. It is difficult to imagine what the interview is like for a head coach in the NFL. Is it like other interviews where they ask them some really stupid questions? Hard to say but probably. Most of these guys you are going to have video to watch to see what they can do. It would seem that talking to the people that they worked for and or were coaching would be better to interview than the person. I am sure they talk to people they have coached and coached for. It would be interesting to sit in on an interview just too see how it goes.
Wildcard Games
In our Picks we did ok on the Saturday Games. Had the Texans and the Cowboys winning. The Texans got pasted by the Colts. The Cowboys won a close one against the Seahawks. The surprise here was the Colts. We had picked the Texans. Not surprised that the Colts won but surprised the way that they won. The Colts look like they are going to be a difficult out moving forward. The Chiefs will have to play a great game to beat them. Going into the Cowboys vs Seahawks game it looked on paper to be a close game. It was very close with the Cowboys being able to run the ball with Elliott and put the game away. It was a fun game to watch but went pretty much the way it was expected to go. Curiously it seems like te Seahawks forgot that they have a pretty good quarterback. By the time they remembered it was too late.
In the Sunday games. We were wrong on both games. Not sure what we were thinking when we picked the Ravens. I had to go back and read it because I really thought that I had picked the Chargers. But alas I did not. The game ended up being much closer than it should have been. The Chargers had a huge lead and then relaxed. The Ravens ended up scoring some quick points to make it a close game. Teams seem to do this alot. They get up big and then have trouble. They relax and then make a game that was looking like a blow out. A close game. The Chargers held on and will now get to play the Patriots. It will be interesting to see what happens there.
In the final game of the Wildcard weekend games. The Eagles won what was a very fun game to watch. At the end when the Bears missed that filed goal at the end of the game. It was heart breaking for Chicago and made the Philadelphia fans feel like they are a team of destiny again. Not sure that this season is going to end the same way for them. This game we had right. Well our pick really should have been right. If not for that missed field goal.
NHL getting close to Mid Season
The schedule is already at the half way point. It is not really considered the half way point till the All Star Game. Over all we are not a fan of All Star games. I get why they have them but they really do not make much sense. The key take away from the first part of the season is that Tampa Bay is really good. They have a ten point lead in the East and an eight point lead over the team in second place for the Presidents trophy. The Calgary Flames are having a great season so for but nothing compared to the season the Lightning are having.
On the bottom end.Philadelphia is dropping like a rock. The Red Wings are only three spots ahead of the Flyers. They are also falling like a rock. Since it is looking like neither of these teams are going to make a run at the playoffs. Maybe they are taking to nose dive to the bottom to try and get the first pick in the draft/
NBA Still Slogging along
With LeBron James hurt is is going to be interesting to see how the Lakers play. So far it is not too well. With him out they have sunk to the 8th seed in the West. He is supposed to be back in a few games. Then they will have the All Star break. He will be find and I still think that they Lakers will finish in the middle of the pack. Possibly doing some damage in the playoffs. The Huston Rockets have turned things around and are now comfortably in the playoff race. It was quite the surprise the way their season started. Getting rid of Carmelo helped and now the team can get back to what they were.
In the East the Bucks are finally looking like they team that people thought that they could be. It is looking like the Bucks and the Raptors will finish first and second in the East. Not sure which team with be in first. Since LeBron went to the West it will be nice to see a different team win the East. It would also be pretty amazing if that team beat who ever the West Champion is.
NCAA Basketball Full in Conference Play
Yes it is and it still does not matter. Even though it is in to January. This will change in the next two weeks. Then we will see some movement and get a better idea who is going to be in.
College Football Championship Game
I kept up with this game but did not watch it. It did not go as expected. By that I mean that I did not expect it to be a blow out. I really thought it would be a close game that came down to the last minute. Every team can have a bad game. Alabama had a bad game and showed that they are not the team you though they were. I have not seen the over night ratings for this game yet. From my point of view this game was great for Clemson fans and bad for every other college football fan in the country. I am an advocate for if you don’t like a team winning beat them. In this case I am not sure that can be done.
Alabama and Clemson just have better players. The have won the recruiting war. By the way the playoff is formatted they have an advantage. They have had this advantage since the start. Ohio State could have been in on that but somehow they managed to blow it. With our current set up this is not a problem that can be fixed. Next year there is probably a better than 50 percent chance we will see another Alabama Clemson championship game and a better than 90 percent chance that at least one of those teams will be in the game. BORING.
This game did not go completely as expected. It turns out that Clemson was much better than everyone thought. I actually saw a tweet by an Alabama player that said that Trevor Lawrence was just throwing up jump balls and getting lucky that the receivers caught them. Sure go ahead and believe that he got lucky 20 times for 347 yards and three touchdowns. I guess his luck trumps your skill then. LOL
Unfortunately for us that more than likely means that we will have a rematch again next year.
