The Week That WasFootball Season NFL Already Three Week In.  College Football is four weeks in.  A few teams are really starting to pull away.  A few are crashing and burning.  Some are panicking.  They should they have really set themselves up for failure.  Advertisers are running from Antonio Brown like Rats Jumping off a sinking ship.  Gardner is a rising star that I really hope makes it.  The Browns are not the team we thought they were.  Michigan was the most over hyped team in all sports this year.  If not the most pretty close.  They have not stood up to any of the hype that surrounded them before the season started.  NHL preseason started.  It seems like it comes earlier every year.  Still super exciting when it does start.  Lousiville settles and Pitino gets exactly what he deserved.  Nothing.  All this and more in The Week That Was.

The NFL Loves Characters

Gardner Minshew is an interesting person.  There is no doubt about that.  The NFL is entertainment and he understands that.  It will help if he can back up the swagger with some good play.  The NFL is in need of some very interesting characters.   It would help if it turns out that he is also pretty good.  I was watching the pregame show on the NFL network when one of the comentators on the show said that Minshew has not shown us anything  yet.  That part is true.  They also said that he would never amount to anything and would be at best a perpetual backup in the NFL.   He has played in two games so far.  Of course he is a rookie and there had been only two games that he would have been able to play in.  He must have been listening to the pregame because he promptly went out and threw 2 touchdown passed no interceptions and led the Jaguars to a 20 – 7 win over the Titans.   This does not mean that he is going to be an all star.  He did show some potential though and he is a really fun player to watch.   It is way to early to make any prediction on him.  Let the season play out and lets see what happens.  With some of the long time players getting ready to move on.  The NFL needs some new exciting quarterbacks.  I am hoping that Gardner Minshew is one of them

Three games in there are 7 teams that are 3 – 0.  The Lions are still unbeaten at 2-0-1 to technically there are 8 teams that are still unbeaten.  The two teams that are 3 – 0 that were unexpected the Bills and the 49ers.   Which of those teams are going to make the playoffs?  I don’t think that either of them are.  I guess come back in 14 weeks and check me on that one.

There are 7 teams that do not have a win.  The only surprising team in that list is the Steelers.  After thinking about it.  The Steelers being winless is not really that big of a surprise.  They Lost Bell and Brown before the season started.  Then they lost Big Ben to an elbow injury for the rest of the season.  Pretty sure they are not going to be able to turn this one around.  On the bright side for them they won’t be the worst team in the league.  The Dolphins and Jets are going to beat them to that one.  The last big surprise in the winless column is the Washington Redskins.  Not sure how good anyone really thought they were going to be but they went the other direction and are just really bad.  Jay Gruden looks like he is coaching to get fired.  Daniel Snyder is trying to cement his place as the worst owner in the NFL.  Luckily for him the Spanos family still owns the Chargers.   The Redskins are a mess.

Speaking of the Dolphins they have taken tanking to the worst extreme.  Tanking is fine but making the product completely unwatchable is not acceptable.  Not sure if anything can really be done about it.  The huge problem is that they are tanking so bad that when they do start the rebuild it may take longer than expected.  The Dolphins probably should have waited to see how the outcome of the Browns rebuild works out before their tanking.

Five Things in the NFL

  1. Lamar Jackson is human after all.  He had a great start to the season.   Of course it was a start against the Dolphins and the Cardinals.  So in hind site everyone.  It needs to be taken with a grain of salt.  Lets watch and see what he does next week.
  2. The NFC North.  Who knew that three games in they would be the only division that has no team with a losing record.  The Bears and Vikings are the only teams with a loss and that loss for both teams was to the Packers.  So the NFC North three weeks in has not lost to a team outside of the NFC North.
  3. The Browns are in Big Trouble – Week four is going to be a make or break week for them. If they lose to the Ravens next week their playoff dreams are pretty much gong to be non existent.
  4. Denvers defense is just not that good at this point.  With the players they have up front with Von Miller, Bradly Chubb and the addition of defensive master mind coach Vic Fangio things are not going as planned.
  5. Antonio Brown may have destroyed any chance he has of playing in the NFL ever again.  Really All he had to do was keep his mouth shut.  Or keep his twtter feed quiet.

NCAA What just Happened

Michigan got destroyed by Wisconsin.   It is getting to the point where the Jim Harbaugh experiment is not working.  Harbaugh says that they were out coached and out played.  He would be correct.  Michigan had everyone fooled this year.  Well not everyone but a large part of the media out there.  The strange thing is that Michigan has the talent.  They just can’t seem to put it together.  That would have to fall on the coaches then.  It looks like there was a reason a large chunk of the coaches bailed on Michigan last year.  With this being the 5th year of the Jim Harbaugh coaching train in Michigan the team really should be much better.   Michigan is a mess.  It is time for Michigan to start thinking about a change.  I know that Ohio State fans think that there is no way this would happen.  I have though this for a while.  If Michigan were to crash even farther and hit the bottom.  It is very possible that Michigan reaches out to the one guy who could turn their program around in one year.  Michigan might back up the Brinks truck and say Urban here is the money.  If you want the job be there tomorrow.  If that happened I think he would do it.  There are a few reasons I think that he would.  Urban loves a challenge.  This would be one of the biggest coaching challenges ever.  The other reason is he could get another one over on Harbaugh.  Urban would make Michigan a winner again and the call up Harbough and say “Hey Jim.  I told you it could be done.”   Buckeye fans think there is no way this could happen.  I have to disagree.  Money and a challenge are huge motivators.  Especially for someone like Urban Meyer.

The PAC 12 appears to be trying to become the Big 12.  But minus having at least one good team.  Washington State and UCLA put up 130  combined points.  This is not an overtime score.  UCLA 67 Washington State 63.  It really appears that defense was optional in this game.  At one point in the third quarter UCLA was down by 32 points.  This really looked like basketball season had already started.  I am not sure if this is interesting football or just what the PAC 12 is going to be left trying to do.  USC beating Utah was actually a bad thing for the conference.  Utah was the last hope the PAC 12 had for a team in the top of the polls.

Five Things in College Football

  1. The Portal is working.  I am sure that there are people that are upset that players are able to change teams now.  This is a good thing that is giving some of the power back to the players.  There is no reason a player who could start on other teams should be forced to ride the bench because there happens to be someone better on their team.  Everyone wants that chance to play and show what they can do.  Perfect example Joe Burrow.  Everyone simmer down.  This is good thing over all.
  2. Clemson and Alabama are still the top of the pack.   I would have put this at one but the Portal is more interesting now.
  3. UCF lost so we don’t have to hear them claim to be the College Football Champion this year.  I am sure they will lose another one this year
  4. Pretty sure that Urban Meyer will be Coaching next year and pretty sure that Jim Harbaugh will not be – Unless UM Beats Ohio State
  5. College Game day needs to change a few things.  The opening is annoying and I love Lee Corso but it is time for him to retire. I want Bears Job on Game day.  Sitting there Picking three games over a three hour show is the job I want

Baseball Fail

Four teams in Baseball have lost 100 or more games this year.   With the Detroit Tigers leading the way with 109 losses.  Think about that.  Between four teams they have combined to lose more than 400 games.  Four hundred games in one season.  That is a lot of games.  I know I seem to be sending some mixed messages.  i don’t have a problem with tanking but then complain when we have four teams that are truly tanking.  This falls into a law of averages type of thing.  With this many teams taking there is no chance that it is going to work out for all of them.  I know you really can’t tell a team hey it is so and so’s turn to tank so you will have to wait your turn.  It would be up to each team to figure it out on their own.  All I can really say on this is that it is a mess.
