The Week That WasCollege Football Full Force That is All that Matters This Week.  Yes there were other sports on.  At least I think there was.  I was not watching them this week.  There was a full plate of college football starting on Thursday and going through Monday this week.  Oh yet there was the U.S. Tennis open.  Most of that is gong to be the same cast of characters as usual.  Tennis really needs something new.  Golf is done.  As we talked about last week they got it right.  NASCAR had a race.  The only thing I can remember is that Dale Jr. Raced in the Xfinity race and took 5th.  That over shadowed anything that happened in the Monster Energy Drink Cup race.  Good for Dale probably not great for NASCAR.  The NFL had a few trades and a lot of releases on the cut down to 53.  All this and more in the Week that Was.  Well not much more it will be a few thoughts on College Football and a few other things.   With the Holiday things got a little pushed back a bit.

NFL Cut Down and Trades

This is a difficult week for a lot of aspiring players and some older ones that want to either have or continue their NFL career.  The teams all have to get down to a 53 man roster.  After the cuts have been completed and players have been claimed or passed over on the waver wire teams can then sign who is left out there to the practice squad.  Of course those players have to meet certain criteria as well.  The cuts were large and harsh this year.  Just as they are every year.  There are always a lot of players that looked to have promise that just did not work out.  Such is the life of a professional athlete.  For some this is the end of the road for others there will still be some hope.

Other things of note this week.  The Dolphins are in deep dive mode.  I saw something about Mike Greenberg feeling that tanking is going to hurt the NFL.  As in usual fashion his rant has nothing to do with the NFL and everything to do with how the Dolphins just appear to be smarter than his Jets.  He would have been better to just come out and say that.  I have no problem with tanking.  If you want to take the risk of alienating your fans then go for it.  It is a huge risk reward prospect.  We know that if it is done right then the pay off can be huge.  Winning a championship type of huge.  We will see how it pans out with the Browns.  The  really have a chance of making it work.  The difference between the Browns and the Dolphins is that the Browns have a super strong fan base.  They will put up with almost anything.  I am pretty sure that the Dolphins are not in the same situation.  If the Dolphins do this and miss then there could be some serious consequence.  That is their choice to try this strategy.  It is not going to kill the league.  It is not going to be doom and gloom.  It is a strategy.  It is a huge risk but the payoff could be fantastic.  Since the Texans don’t understand trade value the Dolphins are already off to a great start in building up their draft picks.  Now like the Browns have so far managed to do they have to pick the correct players.

We are way behind on our season preview.  As I can I will be getting each division posted.  Some of them may be posted after the season started but the records have all been picked so it will not be affected by what happens week one if the posts are not up yet.

College Football First Full Week

We are finally in to the season in College Football.  For the most part the season started out as expected.  There really was not a lot of surprises.  It looks like the PAC 12 is not going to be very good again.  Clemson and Alabama rolled a long.  The Big Ten is going to have a top heavy league.  The ACC has one team.  The Big 12 with ten teams is going to be a fight.  Notre Dame Struggled but managed to beat a Louisville teams that will be lucky to win more than one game this year.  Michigan the darling pick of the reporters this year did not look that great.  Ohio State went up by 28 in the first quarter and then forgot that the game does not end there.  Michigan State held Tulsa to -73 yards rushing.  However they only managed 105 against a team that gave up a lot of yards last year.

In the PAC 12 Oregon manged to get the SEC another win by pretty much giving the game to Auburn.  Really Oregon the SEC does not need that kind of help.  LOL.  Stanford beat a Northwestern team that really did not play like a Pat Fitzgerald coached team.  The Big 12 went 10 and 0 this weekend.  The Big 10 went 12 – 2.  The SEC went 9 – 5.  The ACC went 7-7 and the  PAC 12 went 8 – 4,  Of course this really does not tell us too much yet.  The ACC we already knew had a good team and a bunch of crap.  The PAC 12 is in some trouble again.  I would not be surprise if Clay Helton at USC is the first coach fired this year.

The Polls only had some slight change after week one.  Oregon dropped 5 spots and Auburn was up 6 after their win over Oregon.  Still not sure that really shows who was the better team. Auburn was given a gift.  Then again we always say it is skill and luck that you need to win.  Auburn got the Duck luck and pulled out the win so for now that counts.

Our Top 5 after week one  We are sticking with the Polls after week one.  I see no reason to move away from them at this point.

  1. Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Georgia
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Ohio State

Oklahoma had the closest game against Houston.  There is a lot of new going on at Oklahoma.  I probably should have put them at five but we will have to see what they do next week.  There was definitely  some growing pains gong on there.  Ohio State had the strong start and then the fall off but they have the same thing with the growing pains.  Probably more since they have new coach and new quarterback.  Again something that we will have to take a look at after week two.

Really just glad that football is back.   I am sure it will go quickly.  It always does.

On the Tube TV Not You

We have been watching Grand Hotel.  It started in June and has been going all summer.  It is probably going to get cancelled.  The numbers are not great but it really was not given a chance to make it.  Starting a new drama show in June does not usually mean good things for that show.  Most of the time it seems like they had already made it and wished that they could change their minds and not make it.  That is too bad the show actually has some pretty good characters and is very interesting.  Seems we have a tendency to watch a lot of shows that get cancelled after the first 12 or 13 episodes.  You would think that we would learn… NOPE

On one we did pick right.  Big Brother is getting close to the end.  It is really interesting to see the direction that players decide to take their game.  The biggest thing I wonder about is when players complain about getting stabbed in the back by another player.  I always wonder – “what game did you think you were playing?”  Ah just the way it is.
