The Week That WasBaseball Playoffs – even if you are not a fan of regular season baseball.  The Baseball Playoffs are pretty amazing.   Most of it I am pretty happy with.  They could probably have some minor changes.  Over all pretty good.  In another season that is too long the NHL got underway.  The start of the NHL is exciting.  Then the lull then the crazy at the end of the season.  Still a while before the NBA regular season starts up but really the regular season in the NBA does not really mean that much.   We already basically know who the final the teams that will vie for a championship will be.

The NFL Continues to be crazy

The NFL season is always pretty crazy.   Part of it is that there is only 16 games in the season.  Every game is important.  The difference between a first place team and a last place team could be a few plays.   Those few plays are all the difference.  At this level everyone had good athletes.  Everyone has coaches that know mostly what they are doing.   The thing that they can’t control is the refs.  The reffing in pro sports especially in the NFL has been getting much worse over the years.   I attribute part of that to human error.  This part might be able to be minimized but can never truly be removed.  That will have to be accepted.

Another problem in the NFL itself.  The refs seem like they are not sure what they are supposed to call and what they are not supposed to call.  I get it that the NFL is trying to make the game safer and to keep key players on the field.   If your good players are always hurt then revenue will go down.  It makes sense.  What does not make sense is making calls that confuse the players, coaches, fans, commentators and the world in general.    At this point in the season they should have this figured out.  They clearly do not as Mike Tomlin has let them know.  This is coming from someone that is on the competition committee.  Will it make a difference?  Probably not.

The Lions have beaten the Packer three times in a row for the first time in over 25 years.  An impressive run for the Packers that came to an end due to something that had not happened for an even longer amount of time.  A kicker missed 5 kicks in one game.  Mason Crosby missed 4 field goals and an extra point.  Missing 5 kicks in a game had not happened since the mid 80’s.   There has been a lot of missed kicks this year.  Back in week 2 possible game winning kicks were missed by the Browns, Packers and Vikings.   The Vikings kicker missed two in overtime and it cost him his job.

College Football Loses some Undefeated teams

We all know that one maybe two teams are going to end up undefeated in College Football FBS division.   Which of the teams left are going to be those two.   We know after this weekend that it will not be Oklahoma and it will not be the surprising Kentucky Wildcats.  Both of those teams were knocked from the unbeaten teams this year.

Oklahoma was the surprise lose of the weekend.   The Big 12 does not play much defense ever but this past weekend against Texas the Defense for Oklahoma was so bad that it cost their defensive coordinator his job.  They lost 48-45 to a Texas team that is either better than people thought or was just able to really get pumped up for a big rivalry game.

Two teams that look like they are going to finish with no loses are Alabama and Notre Dame.  Alabama just looks that good so far this year.  Notre Dame has no ranked opponents left on their schedule.   Of course either one of these teams could have a slip up.  it seems to happen at least once every year.   We could end up with three undefeated teams this year if Ohio State can overcome giving up big plays every game.  Giving up those plays will come back to bite them at some point.

NASCAR?

Yes there is still NASCAR going on.  As we point out every year.  The NASCAR Season is way too long.   It goes to far into the Football season.  Both NFL and College.  NHL and NBA start up before the season ends.   It is crazy and the NASCAR numbers really show how they struggle at this time.  This should be the high light when they are going to crown a champion.

On the bright side some of the young drivers are starting to win.  After the race this past weekend at Dover Chase Elliott is leading the standings.   With the win he has clinched a spot in the 4th leg of the playoff.    Of course figuring out the playoff structure is as difficult as figuring out the race structure.  I know it is not really that difficult but it is really annoying.  I miss the days when they just races and the first one to the finish line is the winner.

Hopefully one of the young drivers can win the championship.  NASCAR really needs that.  They need that as bad as they need to fix their race and playoff structure.  I understand that the season is not going to get any shorter.  It really should.   They are losing fans.   I still think that the NFL should buy it.  The ties ins would make money for both.

MLB the Playoffs are living it up

Even with the Brewers sweeping the Rockies the excitement of the MLB playoffs as been there.  We have said this before that the Baseball Playoffs are fantastic.  Exciting even when there is a sweep.   As long and crazy as the Baseball season is.  The Baseball Playoffs make up for that long boring season.   The Baseball season is not as meaningless as the NBA season but it is not much better.

MMA trying hard to be the WWE

In what was clearly a calculated action.  I guess this is what people want.  The fight at UFC 229 between  Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov was actually a pretty good fight.  it was interesting and went 4 rounds.  It was what happened after the fight that causes they “problem”.    The UFC is calling it disappointing don’t let it happen again, wink wonk.

Lets just say that it worked.  If they did not plan this then they went with it after.  Pretending to be mad about it and condemning it but deep down fist bumping each other that they got all this attention.   That is fine but pretending that it is something it is not becomes a thin line.   In the end it is entertainment so it can be what ever they want it to be.   Some people will love it.  Others will hate it.  They just have to decide which audience they want to go after.

Walking Dead Crashing

The fall season of the Walking Dead fired up on Sunday.   It was an OK episode.  A little better than most of the episodes from last season.  Not as good as the episodes from a few years ago.  In the height of its popularity they were must watch television.  With the events of the last few seasons they have alienated a large chunk of their viewers.    The season premier this year had almost half the audience that the season 8 premier had last year.   The powers that be have truly misjudged what the audience wants and what they are going to be interested in.
