Just as Autumn returns. We are bringing back the Week that Was. Since we like abbreviations at biglakesports.com so much we will call it TWTW. Autumn is always a great time of year. The weather gets to the point where you can wear shorts and a sweat shirt. If that is not one of your favorite ways to dress – What is wrong with you? We jest you can wear what ever you want but really if you don’t like that what is wrong with you.
Autumn Returns also means Football both NFL and College. Two of the most popular sports ever. It also brings the start of the NHL and NBA. The end of NASCAR MLB and Golf. There is a bit of everything going on. There are beginnings and endings all around when Autumn Returns. It also brings the new television season. That one is kind of a dying event but for now it continues.
The NFL
The NFL is and always will be a roller coaster ride. This past week was no different. It what everyone was calling a sure thing. The Vikings were a 17 point favorite and in position to take the lead in the NFC North. Instead they were easily beaten by the Bills. Let me say that again. They were easily beaten by the Bills. A team that many people were saying could be the third team to go 0 – 16. Not only will the Bills not join the 0 -16 club. They will have a win against a team that if they can get their stuff together may play in the Super Bowl. Funny how things go in the NFL. The team with the predictions of a bight season looked like the team that was supposed to fail. The difference between going 0 – 16 and having a decent season it just a few plays a game. A lucky bounce. Just about anything. Even the bad teams in the NFL have good players and sometimes that shows.
Three games in and who would have thought that the Browns would have the same record as the Packers the Vikings and the Steelers. Anyone that says they predicted that is telling you a lie. No one out there thought that. It just points to how crazy the NFL seasons can be. Other than the Patriots over the last decade or so nothing has been predictable.
Next week we will already be a quarter of the way into the NFL season. At this early point nothing is clear and early success or failure does not in any sense mean that is the way the season is going to go.
Golf
Tiger Woods did something that many were predicting would never happen again. Not only did he win but he won in a dominating fashion. He lead the entire tournament championship from start to finish. He ended up coming in second behind Justin Rose for the Fed Ex championship. which is pretty amazing since he as not even on the board at the beginning of the season. Is Tiger back? (no pun intended) It is difficult to say. Will have to see what happens next year. Even if he is not. Tiger provided some much needed attention to the sport of Golf. This was a successful season for Tiger and for the PGA.
NBA
The NBA is getting ready to start. It was strange to see LeBron in a Laker uniform. It is what it is. He made his choice. This is going to be a difficult season for him. The possibility does exist that the Lakers make the playoffs. It is much less likely that they will beat The Warriors and make it to the finals. It will be interesting to see how the season goes for the Lakers and for the Cavaliers.
Heading into the season. The only thing I see different than last year it that the Warriors will not be playing the Cavaliers in the finals. Other than that it looks like the regular season will not mean much and we will basically have the same result as the last two years.
NASCAR
I guess the season is still going. This has become such a train wreck that it is difficult to follow. It is difficult to watch. The teams are doing nothing to make you want to watch. It has become so bad that the France family is trying to sell the league. We talked a bit about this last year. The NFL should buy it.
Television
With the Autumn Return we also get the end of the summer television schedule and the start of all the new seasons. This will be the final season of The Big Bang Theory. This is a show that I have always enjoyed. Others not so much. it gets a bit confusing when you get to this kind of ground. I have had friends that have said things like it should have been cancelled a long time ago. Ah ok. I have a solution for you. Since Television viewing is a voluntary activity. If you don’t like a show just don’t watch it. I know a unique point of view.
We have been big Americas Got Talent fans over the years. While this seasons performers were pretty good. i would like to see it go back to being less singing heavy. I really like the variety act better on this one. At least a magician won rather than one of the singers. Maybe that is a good sign for next year. The other show that we are really big on over the summer is Big Brother. It has been one of our favorites and as long as it is on will continue to be. If you have not watched it you should give it a try. If you have and don’t like it. i get it. it is petty and cut throat. But we still like it.
Autumn Returns means cooler weather pulling out the sweat shirts and a nice brisk breeze. Big excitement and some great weather. Let us know what you think in the comments.
