With the close of Super Bowl 50 unless you are a fan of the Broncos your season ended with disappointment. The two week build up to the Super Bowl 50 seems like years. If it feel this way to the fans I can only imagine what it must be like for the players. Personally I think that the two week wait is too long. But I do not get to make a the schedule so it really does not matter what I think… They know that people like us will watch anyway.
In a time when offense has been getting all the headlines it was the defenses that took over the Super Bowl this year. Specifically the Denver Broncos defense. The Broncos defensive game plan and execution was almost perfect. They were able to take the Panthers completely out of their offensive game plan and force them to make mistakes. The Broncos forced a strip sack and recovered in the end zone for an early touchdown that made the Panthers timid and unsure of how they were going to move the ball. This was less about the Panther offense playing poorly and more about how well the Denver defense played and made the Panthers look bad.
Cam Newton was beaten and batter the whole game. He was sacked 6 times threw an interception and gave up the fumble that the Bronco defense recovered for a touchdown in the first half. The Broncos offense did not play well either. They gave up two turn overs. Manning thew an interception and gave up a fumble as well. The two extra turn overs the Bronco defense forced were the difference in the game.
The Officiating in the game was horrible. But it has been horrible the whole year so this was not a surprise. Another replay where the replay officials got it wrong on a pass that should have been a completion. More than likely that was not a turning p0int in the game but the NFL has to know that this can not continue. The officiating has to get better. Especially in the leagues biggest game of the year.
Peyton Manning was adequate at best. The MVP voters got it right by giving the award to Von Miller with his 2.5 sacks and his constant pressure on Newton. Miller was all over the field in this game allowing Andre Ware to do his thing.
The real MVP of this game should have been Wade Phillips. His game plan was flawless and he has the full attention and confidence of his players to execute the game plan to perfection.
The Broncos defense applied pressure and showed why they were the best defense in the NFL this year. Peyton gets to go out on top. This would be the perfect end to an amazing career for him. The deterioration of his skills were glaringly obvious in this game. I would like to see him retire now on top and not come back for one more try and possibly get seriously hurt. He should go home and spend some time with his family have a few Budweiser’s and then announce his retirement.
With Super Bowl 50 in the books the season done I am ready for the next football season to start. The combine is only a few weeks away starting on the 26th of February. Then on to free agency and the draft. The NFL has one of the shortest seasons but has truly become a year round sport.
What is your early prediction on who will win the Super Bowl next year.
