NBA Out Shines the NFLNBA Out shines the NFL is a head line that I saw this week.   Well it actually said the NBA could out shine the NFL.  Could it happen?  Sure and pigs might fly   After all Hell did freeze over this week.  Actually being in Southern Michigan Hell freezes over ever year. So you can count on Hell freezing over every year.   You can also count on the Super Bowl.  No matter who is playing in it.  To out draw and out shine the NBA.

After a year of slight declines in NFL viewership.  The NFL number were up across the board by about 5 percent.  We are not even sure that last years blip was real.  People are consuming live sporting events in diferente ways.  If you believe that last years drop was real.  Then you have to believe that this years NBA drop is real.  I don’t know if it is or not.  What I do know is that the NBA is still miles behind the NFL in popularity.

In the USA Today article the author says that unless te Super Bowl is an amazing game that the NBA will out shine the NFL.  He also puts forth that they already have this week.  Saying that the return of Lebron James to the Lakers was the top story of the week.  Maybe he is just a huge NBA fan.  Or Maybe he is a huge Lakers fan, Lebron fan.  It is possible that the NFL just pissed him off somehow and he is trying to lobby against them.

In all the areas that I read and listen to sports news and opinions.  This week was all about the Super Bowl.  They did bring up Lebron.   There was talk about the trades that are going on in the NBA.   As a side note it is interesting that the NBA off season and the trade deadline are more interesting than the actual product.  But even with that.  The NBA did not and in the foreseeable future will not outshine the NFL.  Especially  during Super Bowl week.

For reference lets look at the revenue of the NBA and the NFL.  In the last year that information is available the NFL brought in $14 Billion.  The NBA brought in $7.4 Billion.  That is despite the NBA having 974 more regular season games than the NFL has.  Think about the difference in per game revenue.  This will also so why the NBA cannot afford to go to a smaller schedule.  Even though I believe going to a smaller schedule would help the on court product.

Another reason given that the Super Bowl will suffer this year.  Is that people are sick of the Patriots being in the Super Bowl.  While I believe that is possible many people are sick of the Patriots being in the Super Bowl.  I don’t think that is a reason people will stop watching.  It will more than likely have the opposite affect.  People will tune in to see if the Rams can knock of the Patriots.  People will want to see if the Rams, the teams the Patriots run started against, can knock them off and possibly end the run of the Patriots dynasty.

Maybe some day the NBA will out shine the NFL.  It will not be this  year.
