I am not sure he fully understands how the optics look. Gase has made it clear that he is not interested in using Bell. It seems like Gase has made it pretty clear that he did not want Bell on the team.
Bell is the highest paid player on the Jets. In March of 2019 Bell signed a four year $52.5 million contract with the Jets. $35 million of that was guaranteed. That is a lot of money to give to someone and then decide that you don’t want them on the team. Now granted Gase was not the General Manager when Bell was signed. In May the Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan and the job was given to Gase. Really not sure of the thinking there since Gase has not really shown that he can be a good head coach and the Jets decided to give him even more responsibility. It was an odd choice that no one out side of the top Jets management thought would work out.
With Gase making it clear he did not want Bell and the way he is using Bell it does not surprise me that he is going to go out and do other things.
Bell said when asked about it “I don’t feel bad about what I did,” Bell said. “I didn’t break any rules. I wasn’t a distraction until now.”
If I were Adam Gase and did not want Le’Veon Bell on the team anymore I would probably take a different approach. Since we knew the team was not going to be great this year I would have ran the legs for of him. I would have had the offense of Le’Veon Bell right then Le’Veon Bell left and then Le’Veon Bell up the middle. Sprinkle in some passing plays for him and get him 400 touches this year. Sitting him just gives him time to think.
Even though Gase did not sign Bell he still needs to deal with him. I think that only using Bell sparingly was not the right move to make. It confirms what I thought before about Gase. He really is not head coach material. He certainly is not General Manager material. If you seriously do not want him on your team. Cut him and let him find another place to play.
The Optics of this do not look bad on Bell or the Jets. It looks bad on Adam Gase.
