Andrew Luck Retires – We Should not be Surprised. The signs have been there since the start of the preseason. Probably the signs were there even before that. The way it was announced probably could have been handled better. There was a lot of confusion about what was going on. They may have been planning some big announcement. It is possible that they had some completely different plan. Either way it would not change that Andrew Luck retired from the NFL. Pretty sure that the reason it happened now is that Luck was really trying to see if he could make it work. Once he figured out that he was just not going to be able to play at a high level he decided to step away.
When Andrew Luck was drafted with the first pick in the 2012 NFL draft he was considered to be a can’t miss pick. There was debate over who the Colts should pick. Robert Griffin III or Andrew Luck. The Colts made the right choice with Luck. Anyone that is saying that Luck did not live up to the hype is wrong. Andrew Luck put up some pretty impressive numbers in is career. He threw for 23,671 yards and and 171 touchdowns in 86 games. He was also sacked 174 times. That number probably plays more into what ended his career than anything.
Luck showed on the field, at least when he was up right, that he was a top level quarterback in the NFL. He made 4 pro bowls in his seven years and won four playoff games. All with a team that had almost no offensive line. When you look at the number of times he was sacked it makes his numbers look even more impressive.
Andrew Luck has proved that he could be very successful in the NFL. His first year in the league he threw for over 4000 yards and 23 touchdowns. It was one of the best rookie seasons the league has seen. The problem was he sacked 41 times. That is a lot of punishment to take. That does not count the times that he was hit or had to run and was then taken down. While that is no where near the record number of times a quarterback has been sacked. It is not a good number.
No one can really know what Luck is going through. In the end it is his choice. I am sure that is was not an easy choice to make. He is at a point in his career where he has already proved a lot. Other than winning a Super Bowl he has done just about everything he could have done to have a successful career. He had reached a point where he had to decide if going through the rehab again was going to be worth it.
I have heard a lot of people talking about how much money he will be leaving on the table. They are right it could be several hundred million dollars. That is a lot of money. That kind of money is not important to everyone. Andrew Luck is already worth more than $40 Million. More than enough money for him his kids and his grand kids to have very nice lives with. Sometimes you just have enough and your health and wellness becomes more important. With his early success and the amount of money he was already able to make. The money left on the table was probably not a large part of the decision process.
Most of the reactions to his retirement have been positive and understanding. When the news broke during the game on Saturday the fans booed. That was a bit surprising and quite sad. Andrew Luck gave those fans everything he had. To the point of destroying his body. He gave you 7 years of excitement he really owes you nothing else. Hopefully the booing was just from surprise and confusion and those people will wish him good will when they come to terms with it, There have been some in the media that have said mean and hurtful things. Pretty sure those people are just trying to grab some attention for themselves. I get it that is their job but I really believe there are better ways to go about that.
Be thankful that we got to see a player like Andrew Luck play. If not for the injuries think of what might have been. Who knows maybe his second career, what ever he decides to make it will bring him more success.
