Ohio State Fans need to simmer down a bit. Nick Bosa is gone and you can’t blame him for taking this path. Actually most of what I have heard especially from players and coaches has been pretty positive and understanding. There have been a few Ohio State Fans that have not been very negative about the decision that Bosa and his family have come to.
First thing that fans need to understand it that this is a business move. A small number of college players are going to make it to the NFL. Even at a school like Ohio State. There can only be 32 first round picks every year. Think about that. Of the approximately 73,000 college football players 1.6% of those players will make it to the pro level. That that number includes the NFL and CFL. Each year there is between 224 and 270 players taken in the draft depending on the number of compensatory picks that are awarded. So at the upper end 270 of the 73,000 get drafted into the NFL. The odds are small that you are going to make it. Even then once you make it the average NFL career is only 3.3 years.
30 Million Dollar Payday
If you are a player like Nick Bosa then you have to look at the end result you are looking for and not let emotions get in the way. Unless Bosa’s leg falls off at the combine in February he is going to be at worse a top five pick and more than likely a top 2 pick. In 2016 Bosa’s brother Joey signed a $25.8 Million contract. He was the 3rd pick in that draft. Even if Nick was to go 3rd the numbers have gone up over the last few years. The number that Nick Bosa is looking at will more than likely be $30 Million or maybe even more.
While we as fans want to believe that the players have the same love of the team as we do. The truth is that for most of them it is a business and they are in this to advance to the next level and then to make money. It is their job. Not every player would make the same decision that Bosa made. There are not a lot of players that will be in the same situation. It would be different if Bosa was healthy and said that he was going to leave so he would not get hurt. That is not the situation he was in. He suffered a serious injury. Surgery was performed to fix the issue and the earliest he would be able to return to action would be in Mid December. The regular season would be over.
Not all Play for the Same reasons
For some players being the the College Football Playoff and possibly winning a National Championship would be worth it. Most of those player would no have a $30 Million payday. All you have to do is make it to that day healthy. Being hurt in a bowl game has happened many times. Costing several players millions of dollars.
Ohio State Fans want to believe that the players ar e in this because they love the team the same way they do. The reality is that they love the team for different reasons. They love it either because they can prepare for the next level of the game and get drafted. Many that play but will not get drafted love the team because they get an education and get to be a part of the Ohio State football team.
