The NCAA Basketball tournament is always great. This year after only the first two rounds you could already make a case that this is the best tournament ever. Just the fact that for the first time since the tournament was expanded to 64+ a 16 seed beat a one seed. You knew that it was going to happen at some point. No one could have expected the way that it happened though.
On the left side of the bracket. The highest seed left is Michigan and they are a three seed. So the final four of the left side of the bracket is gone. I don’t know for a fact but am pretty sure that has never happened before. The chances of the top 4 seeds from a whole side of a bracket being gone is probably pretty slim.
I was not very high on Virginia being a one seed. Yes I know that they cruised though the ACC and beat some pretty good teams along the way. There was something about that team that just did not stack up. I did not in my wildest dreams think that they would lose to a 16 seed though. Lose to a 16 seed by 20 points and the only time they were actually in the game what at the opening tip. This is what makes this tournament so exciting. Anything can happen. With the parity that seems to be coming to college basketball it will make this tournament even more exciting.
It will be interesting to see what is going on with the ratings for the tournament. While football ratings are down a bit. It will be interesting to see what this does to the basketball ratings.
What does this mean for the future
With all the craziness that has been going on in college basketball. The cheating scandal the sexual assault allegations the shoe scandal. They needed a distraction. The upsets in the tournaments are turning some heads and crating some distractions. Of course this tournament can’t go on forever so things will come back full circle.
It took decades for a 16 seed to win in the tournament. It will probably be decades before one of them wins again.
What do you think?
