Championship week is here. This Saturday from noon to midnight will decide who is going to be in the College Football Playoff. The PAC 12 had their Championship game last night. Someone messaged me last night as asked why the PAC 12 game for Championship Week was on Friday night. The only answer that I could come up with was because it makes no difference and no one really cares. What it did do for me is mess up my normal Friday night TV viewing. There was no Hell’s Kitchen on. It has been one of the best seasons of Hell’s Kitchen so far so missing it to show a game that had little to no meaning. It ended with Washington winning 10 – 3 over Utah. I just kept track of what was going on and did not watch. I am not sure if the low score was due to really good defensive play or just really poor offensive play. Probably a combination of both? Don’t know. Since it really did not matter. I guess the winner may get to go to the Rose Bowl so it matters for that.
The games this Saturday spread out very nicely and the way it worked out was really nice for a Championship week and for the College Football Playoff committee.
Big 12
The first game is the Big 12 championship game Oklahoma against Texas. For the Big 12 just taking the top two teams rather than having divisions it actually worked out pretty well for them. If they are going to continue with a championship game they really need divisions but hey they have had trouble understanding how things work before. So chances they will get this are slim.
The rematch fo Texas and Oklahoma works out well. The only loss that Oklahoma has in the close loss to Texas earlier in the season. If Texas wins again then the Big 12 is probably out. If Oklahoma wins. Even in a close one chances are that they will be in. This should be a pretty good game. Over all these teams are pretty evenly matched. With the Rivalry that they have they play each other tuff.
Prediction – Oklahoma 35 Texas 28
SEC
The second game for Championship week is in the SEC. Alabama vs Georgia. This game has some huge implications for the playoff. If Alabama wins then they are the one seed for the playoff. It does not matter if they win by 1 or by 30. It will all count the same. The interesting part is what happens if Georgia wins. If Georgia wins by 1 then it is possible(probable) that both teams are in. If Georgia wins b 10 or more and dominates Alabama then the Committee will have some decisions to make. Even if that happens I still think that it is likely that the committee will put Alabama in. I think this for a few reasons. First Alabama is a huge draw. You either love them or hate them. People will watch to see them win and people will watch to see them lose in the playoff. The second reason is that Alabama has performed well in the past and it is likely that will continue.
I really don’t see that happening though. This Alabama team looks like one of the best teams that Saban has put together.
Prediction – Alabama 28 Georgia 24
B1G
The final game of Championship week is in the Big Ten. Ohio State against Northwestern. It is nice to see a team like Northwestern in a championship game. It is not idea for Ohio State but makes for a fresh team in a championship game rather than the same tired teams. This is another reason that we need to change the way the teams are selected for the playoff. If Northwestern wins this game they will not be in the playoff. If we put the champion of the conferences in then they would be. People would cry and cry about how we don’t get the best teams in that way. I say it still makes more sense than having a bunch of talking heads sit in a room and decide. Besides if you do the eight teams in the 5 champions and three wildcards then you still have the teams that lost their championship with a chance to get in.
I don’t think that we are going to have to worry about that in this game. The question is by how much is Ohio State going to win this game by. Since this game does not kick off till 8. Ohio State will know exactly what they have to do. They probably already know this. If Urban has his wits about him then he will have them ready to play and have them prepared to score as many points as they possibly can. If Ohio State wins by less then 35 points then depending on the earlier games they will probably still not get in.
Prediction Ohio State 56 Northwestern 10
The conference championship games really have to start counting for something. Either the winner gets in or you should just get rid of them. Notre Dame needs to get in a conference of be kept out of the playoff. Lets just hope for a great day of football and hope that Chaos is the theme of the day.
