The first college football playoff poll has been released. There really was not any surprise in it. The first poll of the season really does not matter much. Whatever the teams are in the top four and what spot in the top four still has a lot of time to change. From past years experience it will change significantly.
Alabama is in the top spot. No one can argue that. Well they could but they would be wrong. Until Alabama does something to make it look like they should not be the top team that is where they should be. When if they lose a game before the playoff I am still not sure that they are not the top team in the country.
Clemson is at 2. LSU is at 3 and Notre Dame is in the 4th spot. I have heard some people argue that the slots matter at this point. I get their point but they really don’t. Sure you have anyone loss LSU team ahead of a no loss Notre Dame team. I get it. Notre Dame your feeling are hurt. But the reality is. Just keep taking care of business and you will be fine. Besides LSU plays Alabama this week. More than likely as long you you win Notre Dame you will be fine when Alabama takes care of business.
Three of the four teams are undefeated. There are only four teams in the College Football Playoff division. The fourth one is the University of Central Florida. They have a decent schedule left against Temple, Navy, Cincinnati and USF. Of course a loss against any of those teams would eliminate them. But winning out will not get them in the playoff either. It would probably take multiple losses be several teams ahead of them to get them in. I do not see that happening.
Of the four in the playoff the one I for sure see out is LSU. It is very likely that they will lose to Alabama. After that their schedule is not that difficult. They should win out in those games. Having the loss to Alabama would eliminate LSU from the SEC Championship game. This would not give them the fire power to get into the playoff.
The playoff says that they want the four best teams in the playoff. I get that line of thinking. However that line of thinking is also what will cause problems with the playoff. They are already crippling the playoff by having 5 conferences but only 4 teams get in. You already eliminate a large section of the the country. When you take two teams from one conference and then an independent. You eliminate an even larger section of the country. While a team like Notre Dame is a huge draw. It still has its limits.
How will the College Football Playoff rankings change next week? LSU will no longer be in it.
