I am not a big fan of Nick Saban but you have to give him credit where credit is due. Going for it on fourth and inches in your own territory takes some guts. Of course he has maybe the best running back in football and an experienced offensive line. It still takes guts to make that call. They probably would have won the game even if they punted but by going for it and making it they took any chance of losing out. Arkansas played great. If Mallett does not toss those two late interceptions thing might have been different but he did throw them (and they were bad interceptions) and they lost. Final score Alabama 24 Arkansas 20. I would say both teams should stay right where they are in the polls. It is a bummer that the pollsters will drop Arkansas after they almost beat the number one team.
Stanford shows the world why Notre Dame will have a long road back to being an elite program. I am sure the Kelly will bring them back. The difference between Brian Kelly and the last two Golden dome coaches is that he is going to build the program his way. To do that take some time. For me there is always a sence of satisfaction when Notre Dame loses so it was very nice to see Stanford take it to them. Notre Dame had no chance in this game. Stanford is an experienced team and Jim Harbaugh is one of the best up and coming coaches in college football. Notre Dame will go on a run since their schedule gets much easier from here. Stanford will move up a few spots in the polls and the Domers should finally not get any of those token votes that they have been getting all season just because of who they are.
The biggest surprise so far today was what UCLA did the Texas. I did not think that a 1-2 team would be able to go to the number 7 team in the country and mop up the field with them. UCLA forced 5 turnovers and crushed Texas in time of possesion (UCLA 35:29 Texas 24:31). I would not have guess this score in a million years well maybe this year… Texas is ripe for getting beat by Oklahoma in their huge match up next week. Texas will drop in the polls and should lose at least 7 spots and maybe more.
Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State roll over weak opponents. That was expected to happen. Some people will say that games like that are a joke but they server a purpose. It gives teams a huge head of steam going in to league play pads the stats and gets much needed play time for the backups. It also gives the weak team a huge payday that helps to keep their sports programs running. It is a win win for all. The only thing to worry about is injuries. Michigan had a few including Denard Robinson who I think if they lose him they are in huge trouble for the Big Ten season. We will find out how serious his injury is probably tomorrow.
Thats is for now more to come later.
As far as the Big Ten teams are concerned, it’s always nice when things happen as expected. Too many times, a big win has been expected only to watch a struggle or (perish the thought), a loss. I agree that games like these serve an important purpose for both schools.
Notre Dame has issues to work out, but the more important story here is the Stanford team. They are proving to be a college football program that is on the rise & I believe this is directly because of coach Jim Harbaugh. I hope he will stay with that program for awhile.
I like that other schools, like Boise, are causing controversy as far as who should get to play in the National Championship game. It’s been the same “golden” teams for far too long.
Enough of college football for now. It’s Sunday. Time for the NFL! More on that after the Packers play on Monday night!
